Who We Are

Philoptochos is a volunteer group within Saint John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church in Las Vegas.  The English translation of Philoptochos is friends of the poor.  We are a local chapter of the philanthropic arm of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America that has offered over 90 years of philanthropy through many programs that make a difference in the lives of people in the United States and worldwide.  Philoptochos fulfills its mission to “help the poor, the destitute, the hungry, the aged, the sick, the unemployed, the orphaned, the imprisoned, the widowed, the handicapped, the victims of disasters, to undertake the burial of impoverished persons and to offer assistance to anyone who may need the help of the Church through fundraising efforts.

What We Do

I am the leadchair for our 2024 Christmas pastry packing at St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church.  Once again, we need student volunteers to help us package our pastries. This event qualifies for service hours, as it directly benefits our church and the community given it’s hosted by the Philoptochos of St John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church. A philanthropic organization supporting local needs as well as national needs. The date is Saturday, December 7th beginning at 9:00 am. The location is inside Kokkos Hall at St John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church (5300 El Camino Rd LV). Similar to last year, lunch will be served and the students can assist as long as they like. Also, doughnuts and other breakfast items will be provided.  Take care and thank you for your consideration. At one point I had three daughters attend Faith. I hope your school year is going well.
